A Quick Glimpse Into the Future of Kitchens

Kitchen Design and Style

Kitchens? Who needs kitchens in the future? Won't we just take flavored food pills that deliver all the nutrients we need? Well, we suppose even if we do wind up in an Aldous Huxley-type world, we'll still need an attractive space to take our meal pills, right?

The popular opinion of kitchen remodel professionals is that the cooking areas won’t be much different than they are today.

To help you get the idea, we’ve prepared this informative article highlighting some of the most important future trends just for you.

What will kitchens look like in the future?

Knowing what trends are most probably about to stick around in the future can help you plan your cooking area investments more easily. It seems like designers and homeowners are striving to make the kitchens: streamlined, shiny and custom-curved.

In truth, we can get an idea of where modern kitchens are headed based on the designs that are currently winning awards in the design world as well as crowd-sourcing platforms.

Here are some of the trends that seem to be rising to the top.

Streamlined designs

There's nary a traditional kitchen in the bunch (which we highly doubt will become a mainstream trend anytime soon since traditional elements continue to be popular). Instead, futuristic kitchen designs have extremely shiny, non-porous surfaces that are easy to clean and maintain, without much worry about chipping, cracking, staining, or etching - all potentials with most natural products.

You can get ahead of this trend by designing a kitchen with laminate cabinet faces that can endure the heat - whether you choose a color or faux-wood version, they are tough, can take a beating, and are easy to maintain.

Shiny surfaces

We have to wonder a bit about this trend. This tendency for everything in the future to be "shiny-shiny" and "reflective-reflective" has existed since the Jetsons days, yet only the true modernists typically go this route. Our guess: until they invent smudge-proof, fingerprint-proof and pet nose-proof surfaces, this trend might only be popular with those who live alone, without children or a more monastic type of life.

However, if you like a very shiny look, we recommend using one of the numerous Quartz countertops options, which come in a range of colors - from pure white to those that replicate natural stone - and choosing a high-lacquer finish for your cabinetry.

Curvaceous lines

Perhaps one of the most striking features found in futuristic kitchen designs is the curvaceous nature of the lines. Even the cabinetry has a wavelike motion to its form. We can see this trend being one that homeowners take on with relish. The key is innovation. The more innovative the materials, the easier and more affordable it is to make these types of custom shapes and forms a reality.

If you like the look of softer curves rather than the more typical 90-degree angles, we recommend choosing Corian or Quartz countertops. Both are manufactured products and so they can be made to suit virtually any shape you want. While high-end cabinet materials can be sculpted like this, wood and laminate cabinets with this type of design will cost a pretty penny.

Hygiene & easy maintenance

One major advantage of kitchens designed with these modern, manufactured materials is that they are often more hygienic than their natural counterparts. Consider that granite, slate, marble and wood all have to be sealed somehow to keep grime, germs, mold, mildew and other contaminants from infiltrating their natural pores or grains.

Synthetic materials, often made from non-porous resins, don't have any nooks or crannies to harbor hygiene offenders so the maintenance they require is as simple as a wipe-down with an antibacterial cleaner. Laminate cabinetry, Corian and Quartz are all considered hygienic materials. If you like a natural look, consider using soapstone, which is less porous than granite or marble.

Smart kitchen technology

Of course, modern innovation means improvements in technology, so kitchens will continue to be smarter and smarter. Everything from refrigerators to ovens and dishwashers will be increasingly monitored and controlled remotely from your own smart devices like some already have.
