Just when you finish your beautiful new kitchen design, you learn that - gasp - the kitchen is listed as one of the 11 dirtiest places in the household. In fact, some experts say your kitchen sink may be crawling with more bacteria and germs than the toilets in public restrooms. Yikes! Fortunately, you can protect your kitchen from harmful microbe propagation with a few changes to your food prep and clean up routine, and by using anti-microbial mats.

There are several ways anti-microbial mats can improve your kitchen.
Cut down on bacterial growth. There's a reason why bacteria are the longest-lived life form on the planet; they're highly adaptable, and they reproduce rapidly. For this reason, kitchen spills should be cleaned up ASAP to prevent bacteria from taking up residence. Anti-microbial mats are made from synthetic materials treated to both attract and then kill microbes. This prevents them from being able to reproduce.
Reduce slip-fall accidents. Because anti-microbial mats are made from rubber, or rubber-like synthetic materials, they form a seal on the hard kitchen flooring surface below. This prevents slip and fall accidents, especially around the kitchen sink or dishwasher, where water tends to accumulate.

Using nonporous countertop surfaces. While granite and other natural stone countertop surfaces are popular, they are also porous. These pores provide the space for moisture, food particles, and microbial spores to mingle. Choose a nonporous countertop surface, such as Quartz or Corian, which are a more sanitary alternative.
Use proper prep and cleaning practices. Wash your hands and food preparation surfaces regularly. Clean floors weekly using hot water mixed with vinegar or an anti-microbial cleaner.
Clean your sinks. At the end of each day, scrub your sinks with cleanser, including the faucets, to prevent bacteria build-up.
