How Long Does it Take to Remodel a Kitchen?

Oct 11, 2011 | by Guest Writer

When you ask a question such as, how long will it take to:

1) Bake a cake?

2) Build a house?

3) Travel around the world?

The answer is almost always “it depends”. What ingredients are you using to make your cake? Are you building a cozy cottage or a palatial villa? How many countries and continents will you be stopping in on your grand tour?

When determining how long a kitchen remodel will take, you’ll also want to ask yourself some very specific questions about the scope of work involved in order to come up with an accurate measurement of a project’s duration.  For example, are you planning to keep your existing appliances and leave plumbing in place? If so, refacing is an excellent option that will take considerably less time than a comprehensive kitchen renovation in which old cabinets must be replaced with new custom models.

As a homeowner, consider budget, design elements, special materials and scheduling constraints before embarking on a home improvement project in earnest.  If you do, you’ll surely save lots of time and experience less stress and hassle, too!

Scenario #1: All-New Kitchen

If you plan to do a significant amount of remodeling using custom-made cabinetry, it’s safe to anticipate waiting somewhere around four weeks from the time cabinets are ordered to the start of the job.  Although this isn’t necessarily a hard-and-fast rule, it definitely falls within normal industry standards.  Remember too that it’s always a good idea to allow just a little extra time for countertop templating, as well as anticipating unavoidable delays. Having a clear plan with reasonable expectations means you’re less likely to be caught off-guard if unforeseen and justifiable setbacks occur.

Scenario #2: Kitchen Refacing

If you choose to do a standard kitchen refacing, you can expect the job to be completed, on average, in three to five days. Kitchen Magic installations are done on consecutive days and because the work is coordinated from a single source, there’s no need to sub work out to multiple contractors. This ensures the least amount of disruption and fastest turn-around possible.

Bonus Tips: Kitchen Remodels Made Easy

A few things to keep in mind...

  • Remain close to home or in constant communication with the crew in case important questions arise
  • Plan to dine out or eat take-out and have plenty of bottled water on-hand
  • Use paper plates and disposable utensils for simplicity and time-savings
  • Keep pets and children safely away from the construction area
  • Be flexible and have a sense of humor

Of course, delays can happen but following some of these general guidelines can go a long way in helping you form a clearer timetable for completing the kitchen remodel that’s perfect for you and your family.
