Tips for a Timeless Kitchen Remodel

Tips and Tricks Cost/Budget

Redecorating, rearranging, or reselling... all are hard to manage if your kitchen can’t keep up with the trends that naturally change over time. Many people purchase a home, dislike their kitchen, have it remodeled, and then 5-10 years down the road, no longer love the kitchen. Materials customers chose years ago may no longer be in style, and their space can start to look dated, or their design taste has changed. They want something fresh and modern. But remodeling a kitchen usually comes at a hefty price. Starting all over again is exhausting and expensive. Getting it right with a timeless look will save you time and money in the future and boost your return on investment if you ever choose to sell your home. So, what elements can you add to your remodel to ensure a timeless style that fits many different tastes? Keep reading to find out!

Neutral Colored Cabinets

Trends come and go, like bold cabinet colors. Now, that’s not to say that you should not choose a unique color for your cabinets if that’s your style and you plan to live in your home for the long haul. But keeping your return on investment in mind, a more neutral color palette will make a world of difference for how your kitchen ages when you’re ready to sell. Choose colors like white, beige, grey, or “greige” to keep it classic and simple (Accessories can always add pops of color to make it more “you”)!

Cabinet Door Styles

One door style that will likely never go out of style is the shaker door. This transitional design gives the kitchen a modern yet simple dimension without putting itself into a particular period in time.

Contemporary, flat front doors are also a safe choice to keep your kitchen style relevant and up to date. These are beautiful in a neutral color, but they can also stand the test of time with a more universal wood finish, so long as they are paired with a popular countertop option. Wood stains like this would include chestnut, grey, blonde, or simply a natural medium brown.

Transitional Hardware

Hardware can be simply described as the “jewelry” of the kitchen. Such small items can make a world of difference when you are remodeling your kitchen.

Stick with me on this... brass. While this may seem like a bold choice for your remodel, it can be a universal finish for any and every cabinet door color and style. Brushed nickel is often a safe choice as well when choosing your hardware.

As far as the style of the hardware is concerned, choose something simple without a ton of dimension. Intricate hardware with “patterns” can be quite loud against a solid color door if you aren’t careful about which style you choose. Something without a ton of texture with one solid finish is the easiest way to keep this part of your remodel timeless.

Flooring

When choosing the best floor to install in your kitchen, think about styles that have been around for a long time, but have yet to become dated. We’re thinking (you guessed it) hardwood floors. Their less expensive counterpart, a laminate vinyl floor that replicates the look of real wood, will likely be the same story.

These kinds of floors tend to hold both their quality and their attractiveness, even as design styles change over time. Tile floors, while beautiful, tend to draw a very specific taste for homeowners, so chances are, they may turn off a buyer for your home.

Countertops

This may be one of the most crucial parts of remodeling your kitchen in order to keep it stylish and up to date. Countertops can be the selling point of a kitchen, and for good reason. They tie the entire feel of the space together, and they withstand an abundance of use through the years. Finding something that both satisfies a universal style while remaining functional and long lasting isn’t as complicated as it may seem.

Stone countertops have been proven to stand the test of time. The trick though, is to consult with a professional to find out which kinds of materials and styles of these stone countertops are most popular among homeowners, and then choose your favorite from the selection given. We’re looking for a return on your investment, but it’s crucial that you also love your kitchen while you are living in your home!

Backsplash cambria-quartz-sheet-backsplash

This may be the hardest part about remodeling your kitchen in an attempt to give it a timeless feel so that it “ages well”. Backsplash trends are always changing and evolving. One of the safest ways to choose a backsplash can actually be to avoid installing one, leaving paint exposed so that it is easy to change the color or add tile. Another typically safe choice could be to use the countertop you chose as your backsplash as well. Instead of the countertop stopping at the wall, or a few inches above it, take the backsplash up the wall to the very bottom of the cabinets. This would make choosing the right countertop even more important, but will easily achieve a high-end, timeless look.

Wrapping it Up

All in all, the most important part of remodeling your kitchen is that you are the one who falls in love with it. But the other important thing is this: if you are going to sell your home in a few years, or plan to move away, remodel it one time, in such a way that you’re happy but can also see a substantial return on your investment years down the road.
