The farmhouse kitchen is one of the trendiest, but also one of the most enduring styles in kitchen design. So, when these new homeowners inherited a Tuscan-inspired farmhouse kitchen in Little Silver, NJ, they knew they had a gem waiting in the rough.

Farmhouse Kitchen Remodel Garners New Modern Warmth

Architectural details abounded in this spacious kitchen layout. However, a stark palette and outdated theme were not fitting for this couple's more modern style. "The prior homeowner did such a great job with the layout of the kitchen," the homeowners recall, noting that they wanted to change up the colors and texture for a more welcoming design.

Most farmhouse-style kitchens focus on natural materials, casual design and abundant cooking space to accommodate large gatherings and meals. Design styles can range from rustic to Shaker, French, Mediterranean, Americana, or modern. However, discovering a modern balance for these homeowners was imperative.

Flourishing with Ideas

The couple sought the advice of design consultant Jill Moskowitz, a 15-year kitchen design veteran at award-winning Kitchen Magic.

Quickly, the remodel plans were underway. The existing kitchen featured a large, functioning island and an impressive tile hearth that would remain a focal point. "We knew the original flooring was going to stay, as was the entire backsplash and hearth," says Jill.  But, she notes that finding the right colors to bring all of the elements together was paramount.

The remodel plans also included cabinet refacing to save both time and materials. The new sophisticated, and warmer, grey tone was achieved by refacing the main cabinets with Maple Wood Windham Shaker style laminated doors and drawers, stained in a soft driftwood hue.

Careful variations in color can create a subtle dimensional effect, particularly in a space as large as this one. "We contrasted the island color to add another dimension because the kitchen, measuring 20" by 15", is a larger room," explained Moskowitz. In keeping with the couple's preference for fresh, modern simplicity, the island was refaced in a lovely neutral Portabella stain. The original tile hearth remains a focal point, but at the same time, new custom fluted fillers now accent the island and cabinet perimeters for a precise contrast to the distressed Driftwood and Portobello stains.

Syncing Up a Garden Variety Design

Meanwhile, a farmhouse-style sink was installed and surrounded by a Cambria quartz countertop in Britannica Warm. The countertop choice, with delicate, warm translucent grey veins that stream across a temperate white backdrop, further complements the updated design palette.

A Place to Gather

For the finishing touches, shabby-chic accents such as additional seating add a casual sophistication. Other details include adding glass front doors above the refrigerator to visually "break up" the taller wall cabinets and to provide an open feel to the overall design.

In the Homeowners Own Words

"Jill was great to work with. She is genuinely patient and made the entire project easy as she took her time to explain everything," state the homeowners. "We love our new kitchen and the colors. It's such a classic look without being too trendy. We put a lot of trust in Jill's design choices as she guided us along the way," they add. "We entertain more with the addition of the extra seating in the bar area. It's ideal for gatherings. In addition, we spend more time in the kitchen because it's an inviting area that lends to get-togethers." In closing, "it feels like it's our kitchen now. It fits our personality and taste."
