5 Design Ideas to Add Instant Style to Your Kitchen

Written by Sara | Jan 16, 2014

Of course, a brand new kitchen transformation would be ideal, but for many of us, a kitchen remodel with brand new custom cabinets and all new countertops just isn’t an option right now.

While you may have big dreams of gorgeous Classic Cherry cabinets and quartz countertops with a full backsplash, there are ways to instantly add style to your kitchen without spending the time or money on a full kitchen remodel.

No, these 5 design ideas won’t give you the transformation of your dreams, but they will help bring your dated kitchen back to life—at least until you’re ready for the real thing!

1. Paint the Walls

We’re constantly amazed by how often homeowners forget about the importance of wall color. Think about how often you use your kitchen, and then try to think about the last time your kitchen walls were painted (we’ll bet you don’t even remember!).

Even if you paint your walls over with the same color, this new coat will instantly make your kitchen appear cleaner and breath some freshness into the space. Looking for a new pop of color? We have blog posts to help you find the shade that speaks to you!

2. Replace the Hardware

Here’s another great one homeowners often overlook—the dingy, dirty hardware they’ve had their hands on for years. By simply replacing those worn out knobs and pulls from the 1970s, you’ll instantly take years off of your cabinets, and bring them right back to life.

3. Change the Light Fixtures

Light fixtures make great conversation pieces, and can often act as the focal point of the room.  Throw away that old ceiling fan collecting dust, and install a modern three-piece set, or a traditional chandelier in the center of the room.

4. Beautify Your Windows

The amount of natural light in your kitchen directly effects how the room looks during the day, especially if you have darker colored cabinets or countertops. But do you really take care of your window treatments?

Buy yourself some new curtains that speak to your personal style, frost your kitchen windows, or turn the whole area into an indoor mini garden!

5. DIY Personal Touches

Lastly—but certainly not least—add some of your personality back into your kitchen that doesn’t include all of your clutter. There are thousands of fun and beginner-friendly kitchen crafts and DIY décor ideas on Pinterest that you can try today.

One of our favorite ideas uses chalkboard paint (or vinyl) to update an old refrigerator, giving it a country farmhouse feel.
